Station Wagon Interior Perspective (A Requiem for John Fahey)

by Robert Stillman

/
  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

The first full-band recording since 'Robert Stillman's Horses', this recording presents a suite written for the late ragtime guitarist/composer John Fahey.

The music is performed by the Archaic Future Players, an ensemble comprised of Jeremy Udden (c-melody saxophone), Kenny Warren (trumpet), Dave Noyes (trombone), Ben Stapp (tuba), and Robert Stillman on Fender Rhodes and drums.

Echoing influences of Charles Mingus, Kurt Weill, and Fahey himself, the music
channels the tunefulness of street-piano ragtimers, the scrappy rhythm of forgotten jug bands, and the resolute melancholia of New Orleans funeral march, refracted through a lens of modernist harmony.

The CD in hand-screened, eco-card gatefold w/ insert essay by Teddy Macker.
Featuring 4-movement suite 'Station Wagon Interior Perspective (A Requiem for John Fahey), plus bonus tracks 'Epilogue for J.F.' and 'N.R. Rag'

“An ornery, creaky vision of American 20th Century fantasia, taking in the drunken lurch of late-night big band, the irrepressible freedoms of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, and the visionary freedom of outsiders like Charles Ives and Harry Parch…8/10 UNCUT‬

“The US composer and multi-instrumentalist presents a brass-and-percussion requiem for John Fahey, which marches, staggers, waltzes, and floats with a euphoric, drunken dignity…4/5 MOJO
