Kevin Sun Conceptually intriguing and a fascinating collaboration in the manipulation of physical media; fragments and loops give the ear and mind an analog to the scattered present, with enough space to wander and return at one’s leisure.

about

<No end>

Finite musical form reflects a belief in the finitude of our situation.

Beginning, middle, end.

A record’s groove accommodates this form: it is cut as a spiral, winding from the edge of the disc to the middle, where it terminates, and the music stops.

A locked groove is a groove cut not as a spiral, but as a closed circle. As long as the record spins, the needle follows the same circular course, repeating the material within the locked groove indefinitely.

In 2015, I recorded over 4 hours of solo improvisations on saxophone, clarinet, percussion, and piano.

These recordings were edited down to 1.5-second fragments and cut as a series looping locked grooves onto five unique dubplates. I hand-painted circular designs on the disc’s white labels as graphic analogues to the sonic content on each side.

I gave these discs to turntablist Matt Wright, and on the same day he recorded the improvisations presented (in edited form) on this tape.

Through repeated use in performances during the period of 2016-2017, most of the grooves in these delicate dubplates deteriorated beyond playability, marking the end of this project.Though the discs' nature was infinite, its substance was not.

This is our situation.

Robert Stillman is a musician from the northeast United States, now based in East Kent, UK.
